Dorothy Kuvuna Yaa: A Journey of Transformation and Growth at CBU

Yesterday at the 2023 Fall Convocation Ceremony, Dorothy Kuvuna Yaa, crossed the stage to graduate with her Bachelor of Science from CBU. Originally from Mombasa, Kenya, Dorothy was drawn to Cape Breton by the class offerings at 小猪视频and the breathtaking beauty of the Island.聽
After arriving, Dorothy says the striking landscapes and vibrant community in Cape Breton reminded her of Mombasa, making her feel right at home. 鈥淚 think I made the best choice coming to Cape Breton,鈥� says Dorothy. 鈥淚t is truly one of the most beautiful places I have had the opportunity to live in. I am surrounded by warm and welcoming people.鈥澛�
Dorothy says the Bachelor of Science offered her a wealth of resources and engaging labs that deepened her understanding of the subject matter. It wasn鈥檛 just the course content that left a lasting mark on Dorothy, but also the dedicated faculty members who helped her every step of the way. 鈥淢y professors always shared opportunities that could help me advance my studies or prepare for the next steps of my journey,鈥� she says.聽
Dorothy also enjoyed the vibrant campus life at the University, participating in everything from Week of Welcome and Capers Games to holiday parties and festivities. She says making time for fun alongside your studies is critical for university students. 鈥淭he strong sense of community and inclusivity at 小猪视频is particularly meaningful to me,鈥� says Dorothy. 鈥淚 admire CBU鈥檚 commitment to acknowledging and embracing diversity.鈥澛�
Dorothy says one of her most memorable experiences took place during Leader鈥檚 Edge, a student leadership conference held at CBU. Through networking opportunities and mentorship, Dorothy honed her abilities to connect with individuals both within and outside of the 小猪视频community. 鈥淚 loved when President Dingwall spoke about due dilligence during Leader鈥檚 Edge,鈥� she shares. 鈥淒uring our networking session he said to me 鈥榠f you are doing your due diligence you are never wasting time. You are right where you are supposed to be.鈥� That has stuck with me ever since.鈥澛�
After closing this chapter of her journey, Dorothy is excited to begin working in microbiology research and has aspirations to advance her studies in infectious diseases with the ultimate goal of joining the medical field.聽
